O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. She was able to advance into the top 100 because of the judges' excitement for her performance. Her performance was highly applauded by judges. Despite this, O'Neil suffered a significant defeat during top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she was voted for in the bottom 3, bottom 3, and bottom 2. They were stunned at the result and exhorted fans to vote for singers with impressive singing skills such as Melissa. O'Neil did not make it to the third place again following a series of consistently outstanding performance. Her two additional performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil was able to advance into the final two of the contest. Werner reportedly forecast that morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie and become her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her on her win at Canadian Idol.
